Dear colleagues and friends
We are happy to inform you that the global re-assessment of the screaming hairy armadillo (Chaetophractus vellerosus) has recently been published. This re-categorization includes the synonymy with the Andean hairy armadillo (C. nationi; see Abba, A.M., Cassini, G.H., Valverde, G., Tilak, M.-K., Vizcaíno, S.F., Superina, M. and Delsuc, F. 2015. Systematics of hairy armadillos and the taxonomic status of the Andean hairy armadillo (Chaetophractus nationi). Journal of Mammalogy 96(4): 673-689).
Several experts have participated in this re-assessment. They have provided a lot of very useful information, which allowed compiling a species account that is as honest and real as possible. As you will see, we have made every effort to clearly state that the high-altitude populations are still highly threatened although they no longer constitute a separate species.
The assessment includes a preliminary range map; we will update it as soon as possible. If you have any information that would help making this map as realistic as possible, such as new locations, please feel free to send it to us!
We would like to extend our warm thanks to everyone involved in this re-assessment, especially C McDonough, F Delsuc, G Valverde, J Heuer, J Loughry, T Tarifa and V Pacheco.
The full, updated account can be found at the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species website.
